Leslie E. Bigelow of Iowa City died at his home on July 7, 2005 following a brief illness.

Visitation will be on Saturday, July 9th from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at the Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be presented to Iowa City Hospice and/or The American Cancer Society.

Born March 14th, 1921 Leslie was the third of six children of Oscar and Geneve Bigelow of Tiffin. He attended Tiffin High School where he graduated valedictorian with scholarships in math, chemistry and basketball. After high school he worked with his father who managed the local lumber yard and later as a radio and TV repairman for Jackson Electric in Iowa City. Upon earning his Class A radiotelephone license from the Federal Communications Commission, Leslie accepted a position with station WSUI/KSUI in Iowa city, where he worked as a radio engineer until his retirement in 1983.

Leslie married Verna S. Fox of Iowa City in June of 1945 and the couple recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Leslie was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He spent the autumn of numerous years with his brothers Raymond and Gene deer hunting in Wyoming. One of his favorite weekend hobbies was camping and he was an enthusiastic member of both the Iowa City Camp Club and the Sun & Fun Camp Club.

He served his community in various capacities through active membership in such organizations as the Isaac Walton League of Johnson County and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he served on the Search and Rescue Team. Leslie also served as constable for the town of University Heights in the late 1950s.

Leslie is survived by his wife Verna Bigelow of Iowa City, two sons; Warren Bigelow (Barbara) of Iowa City and Craig Bigelow (Bonnie) of McHenry, IL., five grandchildren; Mandy Bigelow, Clint Bigelow and Kristin Bigelow (all of Iowa City), Benjamin Bigelow and Stephanie Bigelow of McHenry, IL., and two brothers; James Bigelow of Coralville and Donald Bigelow of Marshalltown, IA.

Leslie was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Geneve of Tiffin, sisters Mildred (also of Tiffin) and Viva Strong of Phoenix, AZ and brothers Gene and Raymond (both from Tiffin).
