Edward Nelson, 87

Edward Bryant Nelson of Gainesville, FL, died April 30, 2004 in Gainesville. He was 87.

Professor Nelson was born in McHenry, KY, and held the BS degree from Western Kentucky State University, the MS degree from Vanderbilt University and the PhD degree from Columbia University in New York City.

He was Professor of Physics and longtime Associate Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in charge of the under-graduate Physics program at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. He shared authorship on twenty research publications as well as authoring a laboratory teaching manual in several revisions.

In addition, he was awarded the National Science Foundation Senior Post-Doctoral Fellowship for a year's study at Cambridge University, Cambridge, U.K. Further, he held an exchange professorship at the University of Exeter, Exeter, U.K., for a year, as well as a Fulbright travel grant.

Professor Nelson was a member of the Physical Society and of Sigma Xi. He is survived by his wife, Judith, their son Edward Tichenor Nelson and his wife, Deborah, and their three children.
