Dale R. Hammer, age 92 lifetime resident of the Iowa City area, died Thursday, April 9, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Dale was born February 18, 1928, in rural Johnson County, the son of Ray and Ada (Klaus) Hammer. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict. On October 1, 1955, he married the love of his life, Mick Schnoebelen in Hills, Iowa. Dale has always worked in the area, most recently for many years in the transportation services department of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, retiring nearly 30 years ago.

He was one of those people that never met a stranger, and would be the first to help anyone in need. He enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, and was extremely happy when his Cubs finally won the World Series, but most important in Dale’s life was his family. He and Mick would be there for all the kids, grandkids and great-grandkids events, no matter what. A proud man he was when surrounded by his family!

His family includes his wife, Mick; their children, Terry Hammer, Trudy Conklin (Jerry) and Ricky Hammer (Katie); grandchildren, Erin Manley (Taylor), Clint Conklin (Sarah), Haley Peters (Nick), Alex Benshoff (Ashley), Cody Hammer, and McKinley Hammer; great-grandchildren, Holden Manley, Callen Conklin, Mayzie Conklin, and Adeline Benshoff; sister-in-law, Carolyn Hammer and numerous, nieces, nephews and friends.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, an infant grandson, Corbin Dale Hammer; brother, Jerry Hammer; sisters, Jean Hammer and Thelma Leeney and her husband, Donald Leeney.

Services celebrating Dale’s life will be held at a later date to be announced. To share a thought, memory or condolence please visit the funeral home website @ www.gayandciha.com. Memorial donations can be made in his memory to Amvets #107 @ 402 Amvets Road, Richmond, Iowa 52247
