ERNEST LEDMAN DIED IN FRANCE
The following account of the death of Ernest Ledman of Kalona, whose name is mentioned in the casualty lists Tuesday, is taken from the Kalona News:

“The sad news was received Monday evening by Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Ledman, that their eldest son, Ernest had died in France, a victim of the influenza. He died October 8th, but from some cause the news was delayed and never reached his parents until Monday. They received his card announcing safe arrival in France but had no other word from him. They were anxiously awaiting news and hoping that all was well with Ernest, but when the news did come it was worst of all new. Ernest left Kalona and Washington, on August 8, along with a group of five special service men for Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.

We do not know of the various changes from camp to camp, but he evidently was rushed ahead for he sailed to France sometime in September or first of October as his death dates in France October 8th. In the death of Ernest, Kalona loses one of its best boys. Always industrious, capable and trustworthy, he was one of those boys that can always be depended on to make good. He was a model boy in his home, where his death causes an irreparable loss. J. F. Suhring with who he was employed in the Eclipse Lumber Yard, remarked to us “Ernest was just as good as gold.” And that about tells the estimation in which he was held by all who knew him. In his death, the entire community loses. He is survived by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Ledman and two brothers, Clarence and Walter.
