Anthony Beranek, 45, Rock Island station agent at Elmira, was killed by passenger train No. 67 late Saturday afternoon. He was going north on his railway motor when the train struck him at a crossing between Morse and Elmira. Blinded by the rain and snow of the late afternoon, the engineer did not see Beranek on the track in front of the train, and it is believed that Beranek failed to hear the approaching train because of the high wind which accompanied the storm. The train crew did not know an accident has occurred until the train had reached Morse and a bundle of clothes which Beranek was carrying on his speeder, was found on the locomotive.
The body was taken to Brosh's undertaking parlors.
Mrs. Beranek and her daughter were in Cedar Rapids when the accident occurred.
A verdict of accidental death, caused by being struck by a locomotive, was returned by the coroner's jury following the inquest Sunday. Members of the jury were M. A. Randall, E. F. Heinsuis and Frank Stusak.
Surviving Mr. Beranek are his wife and daughter, Violet, three brothers, John, Frank and Charles Beranek of Morse; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Apitz and Mrs. Charles Gill of Solon and Mrs. Frank Snyder of Washington.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Mary's church at Solon, with interment at Oakhill cemetery at Cedar Rapids.
