6 May 1909 - West Branch Times

Edward P. Whitacre was born at Marrow, Warren county, Ohio, October 17, 1829, and died at his home in Iowa City, April 30, 1909, aged 79 years, 6 months and 13 days.

He was married to Eliza T. Welch, January 1, 1863, who preceded him to the better world April 9, 1894. He came to Johnson county forty years ago and settled in Lincoln township, having thus passed through the days of a pioneer of the county and has seen the progress as well as had to do with the general advancement of this part of the country. He moved to Iowa City several years ago and was married to Mrs. Emma Anderson, September 3, 1896.

He is survived by his wife and four children, Edward T., of Haswell, Colorado; Dr. Charles J., of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Mrs. George Bowen of Haswell, Colorado; and Mrs. Carl Paulus, living on the home farm. Also two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Allen Breed of Perry, Ia., and Mrs. Ross Leech of West Branch; Albert, Maurice and Amos Whitacre of West Liberty.

Ed as he was familiarly called, was a respected member of the community in which he lived and was honored by positions of trust in business affairs. He was a long time member of the Masons who had charge of the services at the grave. He was a birth-right member of the Society of Friends and still retained his membership at West Liberty. Since his removal to Iowa city he has been a regular attendant at the Methodist Episcopal church and has been one of its loyal supporters. An honored and esteemed man has gone.

The funeral services were held from the home on Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. L. C. Clark, pastor of M.E. chruch, in the presence of a large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends. The profusion of beautiful flowers at his casket gave silent token of the respect and esteem in which he was held.
