2 November 1911 - West Branch Times

Mrs. Mary Ohl, one of the oldest residents of this community, died Thursday evening, Oct. 26, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary A. Franklin, East Fifth street, West Liberty, her death being due to the complications arising from cancer and the ravages of age. Mrs. Ohl celebrated her ninety-third birthday, July 18, last.

Mary Akers was born in Pike county, Pennsylvania, July 18, 1818 and May 2, 1837, was united in marriage with Frederick Ohl in New York City where they resided for about four months following the ceremony. Later they moved to Pennsylvania and in 1856 came to Iowa, settling on a farm near Iowa City. Six years later they moved to a farm in Cedar county and after a few years residence there went to West Liberty, where they remained for sixteen years. From West Liberty the couple journeyed to Oasis and thence to Morse where they lived until Mr. Ohl's death in March of 1900. It was while their home was in Morse that they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Following the death of her husband Mrs. Ohl took up her residence with her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Bogue of Morse. Mrs. Bogue preceded her mother in death and in her remaining years Mrs. Ohl divided her time with her daughters, Mrs. Ellen D. Boyce of Iowa City and Mrs. Franklin of West Liberty, having made her home with Mrs. Franklin through the last seven years. Of the family of eleven children, the following survive: Mrs. Boyce and Mrs. Franklin and three sons, A. R. Ohl of Tropica, Calif., and Milton C. and George H. of Madison, S.D. Besides these forty-seven grandchildren, forty-seven great grandchildren and eleven great, great grandchildren are living.

Mrs. Ohl enjoyed a large circle of friends here and in other communities she had called home. Many years ago she united with the Christian church and so long as her health permitted too, an active part in the affairs of the church. Of late years she had not been able to leave her home to any extent though even as late as last summer she found enjoyment in walking about the yard.

Brief funeral services were held Saturday morning, 10 o'clock, from the Franklin home, in charge of Rev. M. E. Reusch. The body was taken to Morse for interment beside the body of her husband. Services were held from the Morse church at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
