Obituary
Peter Jacobs was born in the village of Ins. in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, July 4, 1828, and died at his house in Sharon township Nov. 29, 1901, being 73 years, 4 months, and 23 days old.
With four young men of his acquaintance he left the house of his youth Feb. 12, 1851, and arrived in this country after a voyage of 48 days. He left in the Fatherland two brothers and two sisters, none of whom are now living.
Peter Jacobs was among those who first answered the President's call for troops in the dark days of '61. He served his country faithfully in a German regiment, Co. D, 9th Wisconsin Inft., until he was severely wounded while trying to "spike" one of the enemies guns. He received his honorable discharge in 1863.
Shortly after the close of the war he came to Iowa, and has since resided in Sharon Township. In 1869 he was married to Susan Blitz. Of this union was born seven children, two of whom died in infancy. He leaves a widow, two sons and three daughters to mourn his departure.
His last illness was very short. On Sunday evening he attended the services at the neighborhood church. The next day he began complaining, and congestion of the lungs soon did its deadly work. Friday at 11:30 p.m. his spirit returned to God who gave it.
He had been a member of the Evangelical church about 40 years and was prepared for the end. He said his soul was at peace and his cared not which way it went, it was all right. He had ever been upright in all his dealings - an honest man, the noblest work of God.
On Sunday, Dec. 1, several hundred friends gathered to pay their last respects to their esteemed neighbor. The services were conducted at the Sharon Evangelical Church by Rev. Streyffeler, who spoke from Eccl 8:8. The remains were borne by the six surviving veterans of the Civil war residing in Sharon township. They were Capt. G.R. Hall, T.D. Davis, John R. Hughes, John T. Jones, Jacob Hirt and L.E. Grout.
Several members of the Riverside Post were in attendance. Kirkwood Post of Iowa City, of which he was a member, attended in a body and conducted the services at the grave. Taps were sounded and he was mustered out of the army of the Lord on earth to enter the host of the redeemer around the great white throne.
