In Memoriam

Henry L. Guffin was born in Johnson county, Iowa, and removed to Kansas when a child with his parents. At an early age he entered upon the duties of a drug clerk, at the Blue Front Drug Store, with the intentions of thoroughly acquainting himself with the drug business. He was eminently studious, devoting all his spare time to those studies that would improve his mind and develop his knowledge of the profession he had chosen for life. He had a retentive memory and a love for the work, with a maturity of character above his years, which enabled him to win a creditable reputation in his business and the confidence of the community in his caution and reliability. He was upright and conscientious in his dealings, pure in speech, kind hearted and attentive in his business relations and by his willingness to oblige others at the expense of his own convenience, he won the universal good will of the community. He was a thoughtful and dutiful son, a kind brother and a warm friend, and he will long be missed by the many who have experienced "Henry's" kindly attentions and service in business.
It seems sad indeed, that one who promised a life of usefulness and success, should be, in God's mysterious providence, taken from us just in the beginning of his career. But God's ways are not our ways, and "He doeth all things well," and how much more satisfactory and noble is even the beginning of a life which was the respect and regard of its fellow men, than a life time spent in selfish acouirements or idle pleasures.
Henry's health has been failing for some time past; he returned to Iowa for a short vacation and was induced to try the virtue of the air and sun in Colorado, but without avail, and he died at Manitou, Colorado, Sunday May 26, 1879.

Article #2

Death of Henry L. Guffin

We cordially and sincerely sympathize with the family of Mr. Guffin and near friends in view of the death of Henry L. Guffin, whose decease at Manitou, Colorado, last Sunday evening was announced here by telegram from Mr. G. on Tuesday morning.
Henry has been for some time in failing health, and though he took a trip to Iowa some weeks ago, the change seemed to produce no permanent benefit, and he continued to decline. The trip to Colorado was finally take in the hope that the mountain region would do for the invalid what Kansas and Iowa could not. And indeed, we understand that for a time reports were sent back of an apparent change for the better. Recently he suffered a fall, which, his friends think, must have hastened if not caused his death, which occurred suddenly at the time above mentioned.
Henry was a young man of excellent character and good habits, ambitious, honorable and faithful in his chosen business, esteemed and respected by all who knew him. His long years of devoted service in the Blue Front Drug Store, with Messrs. Wyer, Sorgatz and Poston, gave him a host of acquaintances and friends, all of whom will regret the sad news of his premature decease. His age was 21. The body was brought home by Mr. Guffin packed in ice. It arrived at midnight of Wednesday, and yesterday at 10 a.m. the funeral services took place from the Methodist Church Rev. Mr. Wood officiating.
