A FACT A DAY ABOUT IOWA CITY

A Pioneer Family

The late Anna Catherine von Stein, daughter of John Peter and Mary F. von Stein, was a descendant of a pioneer family that came to Iowa City 100 years ago and during that time various branches of the family have played an important part in improving farms and building homes in Iowa City and vicinity.
Her grandparents, John George and Katherine Dorothea Roessler, after living 10 years in Ohio, sold their land and started for Iowa from Cincinnati by boat, having traveled down the Ohio and up the Mississippi river to Muscatine. They came from Muscatine to Iowa City in a wagon, arriving here on July 3, 1840. The cornerstone laying program at Old Capitol was held the next day.
The Roessler boys helped in construction of the capitol. Christopher hauled with an ox team stone for the capitol from Zeller's quarry near North Liberty.
When the late Miss von Stein's mother was 12 years old, she attended an early Iowa City school, at the corner of College and Clinton Streets. Jesse Berry, one of the earliest instructors, was her teacher.
The Roesslers settled on land in Sharon township. In 1838 Miss von Stein's father left eastern Pennsylvania and went by boat from Pittsburgh to finish learning the shoemaker trade. Later he managed his own shoe business in Pennsylvania. In 1855 he was engaged in the shoe business with Jacob Ricerd and bought land from the government at $1.20 an acre near North Liberty which he improved before retiring and building a home in Iowa City.
