Carl A. Paulis, 57, farmer residing in Lincoln township, passed away Saturday morning at Mercy hospital from injuries received Wednesday when his left arm was mangled when caught in the power take-off of a tractor attached to a corn husking machine on his farm.

Mr. Paulus was born April 25, 1876, in Scott township, and has passed his entire life in Johnson county. He married Martha Ann Whitacre on December 20, 1904, and had been engaged in farming since that time.

He was a member of the Scott Presbyterian church, and also Eureka lodge No. 44, I.O.O.F. lodge.

He is survived by the widow; two daughters, Gertrude of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Marjorie of Des Moines; three sons, Dr. Edward Paulus of Ann Arbor, Mich., Harold and John at home, a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Williams of Iowa City; two brothers, C. L. Paulus and G. R. Paulus, both of California.

Mr. Paulus suffered severe injuries about the arms, shoulders, chest and neck in the accident Wednesday. He reached back to release a lever when either his mitten or sleeve caught and he was dragged and twisted into the machine. His clothing was practically torn from his body. The accident occurred in the far end of an 80-acre field and an hour elapsed before he was found and extricated from the machine.
