1928-2013

Gladys A. Zahs, 84, of rural Riverside, died Tuesday, September 17 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, following a lengthy illness. A celebration of life was held Friday, September 20, 2013 at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A general memorial fund has been established.
Gladys Anne Zahs born October 18, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Frank and Myrtle (Payne) Marek. She worked at various times for Amphenol Steel, the railroad and Wiebolts Department Store.
She was united in marriage to George Zahs, September 11, 1949 in Cicero, Illinois. The couple lived and farmed in rural Riverside until George’s death June 7, 1984. Mrs. Zahs continued to live on the family farm until her death.
Mrs. Zahs spent most of her married life as a housewife, assisting her husband with the farm and raising their three children. She also worked in the sewing room at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She enjoyed sewing, reading, and spending time with her family, most recently her great-granddaughter Adlei.
She is survived by three children: Mary and husband James Marek of Kalona, Patricia Zahs of Riverside and Robert and wife Marta Zahs of Iowa City; five grandchildren: Callie and husband Adam Shalla of Riverside, Nicholas Gruwell Zahs and Kate Zahs, both of Iowa City; one great-granddaughter: Adlei Lynne Marek of Washington; one sister: Charlotte and husband Walter Bock of Lombard, Illinois; two sisters-in-law: Nancy Marek of Elgin, Illinois and Elaine Zahs of Kalona; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Zahs in 1984; two brothers: Robert L. Marek and Leonard F. Marek; two sisters-in-law: Helen (Zahs) Harden and Nancy L. Marek; and two brothers-in-law: Dean Zahs and Louis Harden.
Peterseim Funeral Home of Kalona is in charge of arrangements.
