Velma F. Brown

Born July 26, 1914, in rural Coggon, IA, the daughter of Leslie and Hazel Henderson. Graduated from Coggon High School in 1931. Married George Brown February 24, 1937, in Manchester, Iowa.
For many years she was the bookkeeper for her husband’s business Brown’s Conoco at the corner of Burlington and Clinton Streets and later Brown’s Shell in Rock Island, IL.
You might have seen her at First Presbyterian Church, Fairview Golf Course, Iowa City Women’s Club meetings, on a bus trip with Four Seasons Garden Club, at Jessamine Chapter #135 Order of Eastern Star meeting, planting or weeding flowers in her yard, watching her grandsons and great grandchildren play baseball and show their animals at the county fair. She loved to sew, play bridge, travel and was an excellent cook.
Velma Frances Brown, 99, passed away December 14, at Oaknoll Care Center from complications of a stroke. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia (Ronald) Stutsman, 2 grandsons, Mark (Kristi) Stutsman and Scott (Donna) Stutsman, 4 great grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren all of Iowa City, brother Dick (Dorothy) Henderson of Cedar Rapids, sister-in-law Waneitta Henderson of Marion, IA brother-in-law Dewey (Linda) Brown of Central City, IA, numerous nieces and nephews.
Velma was preceded in death by husband George Brown in 1985, sister Florence Hoag, and brother Harold Henderson. She will be remembered for her quiet sweetness, positive attitude, hearty laugh and the care and love she showed to all who knew her.
Memorial gifts may be directed to Iowa City Hospice of First Presbyterian Church, Iowa City.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Oaknoll for their compassionate care and friendship.
