Elias Strickler Dies
Again our community has been called upon to mourn one of its oldest residents. Although Elias Strickler had lived for the last few years in Kalona, Sharon never gave up its claims upon him. He was born in Knox county, Ohio, May 20, 1842 and came to Iowa with his parents when he was 11 years of age. All the active years of his life were spent on the farm which he owned about two miles southeast of Sharon Center. The Strickler family was among the early pioneers making the long trip from Ohio overland, driving a team of oxen. They were among those who were first to break the virgin soil of our fair prairies and open the way for those who were to come after them. November 11 1867 Elias Strickler married Miss Amelia Zager, who still lives to mourn the loss of her life-long companion. Their four children are, Mrs. Lillian Troyer of Kalona, Mrs. Z. I. (Minnie) Grout of Tingley, Iowa, Mrs. Joseph H. (Florence) Miller of Sharon, and Charles of Kalona. There are also eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, besides a large number of other relatives and a host of friends who will miss this departed one.
Mr. Strickler was a charter member of the Sharon Evangelical Church, and his interest in the welfare of this organization never waned.
While his health had not been good for some time, his departure came suddenly and quietly to the last. When he gladly responded to the call. "Come up higher." He was laid to rest in the cemetery near the Evangelical church Friday afternoon. The services were in charge of the pastor Rev. L. H. Wood assisted by Rev. O'Dell of the M.E. Church.
