Brendan Michael McCarty Fisher, 23, formerly of Iowa City, died Saturday, January 22, 2005, of injuries sustained in a weather-related car accident in Milwaukee, where he resided.

A lunch for family and friends will be held at Regina High School following the committal service. Friends may call Friday from 3 to 8 PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a Vigil Service will be held at 7PM. In lieu of flowers, the Brendan Fisher Memorial Fund has been established at Hills Bank and Trust, 1401 South Gilbert Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52240.

Brendan was born August 10, 1981, in Iowa City, the son of Wayne and Jerilyn (McCarty) Fisher. He was a member of Regina High School’s Class of 2000, graduated in May 2004 from Marquette University with a BA in Criminology and Law Studies, and was working toward attending law school.

Brendan was an endearing child, with a ready smile and brown eyes that could melt your heart. His creativity was evident early on, as he would become absorbed watching National Geographic and draw detailed pictures of animals they featured. He also found great pleasure in spending hours thoroughly engrossed in building creations of his own imagination out of his Legos.

Throughout his life, Brendan loved sports—both as a participant and as a spectator. In his childhood, he played Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, Flag Football, and Iowa City Kickers soccer. He loved making friends from throughout Iowa City through these organizations.

While at Regina, Brendan participated in basketball, baseball, track, and football. He particularly loved playing football, playing both corner back and receiver, and he always enjoyed a good tackle! At the conclusion of his senior year with the Regina Regals, Brendan’s coaches awarded him the Hit Man Award for his defensive play.

He was always an avid sports fan—he particularly loved following the Pittsburgh Steelers, and enjoyed many pleasant times attending games at Miller Park and Bradley Center in Milwaukee. A highlight for Brendan was making the trip with his friends to New Orleans to watch Marquette play in the Final Four in 2003.

Brendan was kind, fun-loving, genuine, warm, sensitive, and extremely loyal. His sense of humor and rapid-fire wit were ever present, as was his infectious and mischievous grin. Brendan treasured and truly loved his family and friends, and was quick to give his time, love, and energy for them, as they did in return for him.

He had a tremendous sense of adventure and delighted in trying new things. Whether it was spending time with his friends on Boundary Waters expeditions or traveling throughout the country to visit friends and see sights, Brendan embraced life and he lived it to the fullest.

Brendan was very proud of what he had been able to accomplish during a Marquette internship in a legal aid office in Milwaukee that assisted HIV and AIDS patients. He was humbled by and grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. Following graduation from Marquette, he worked in the intellectual properties division of Michael Best & Friedrich in Milwaukee, and most recently worked for First Horizon Merchant Services, a marketing firm in Milwaukee.

Brendan touched many, many lives, and had a tremendous impact on those who knew and loved him. And while we may mourn the fact that he was not able to realize his full potential due to his short time in this life, his heart, courage, inner strength, and love, will remain his legacy forever, and he will never be forgotten.

Brendan is survived by his parents of Iowa City; his sister Courtney of Iowa City; his grandfather Vern (Betty) Fisher of Iowa City; his uncle and aunt Richard and Sandi McCarty of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, and his cousin, Joe McCarty of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, paternal grandmother, and his aunt Barb Fisher.
