Daniel L. “Dan” Sweeney, 67, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at his home.

A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church
In Iowa City. Reverend Steve Witt will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The family will greet friends Monday from 4:30 to 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to The Daniel Sweeney Memorial Fund.

Dan was born September 25, 1949 in Iowa City, the son of Joseph and Beatrice (Driscoll) Sweeney. Growing up in Iowa City, Dan graduated from Regina High School in 1967.

Dan worked as a police officer with the Coralville Police Department and later transferred to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff. He was also a pilot and flew as a corporate pilot for many years. Most recently, he was employed by Petersen Iron and Metal before retiring.

Survivors include his three daughters, Sherry, Brandy and Kris; sisters, Donna Kelley and Sharon Sweeney, both of Iowa City; brothers, Joe Sweeney (Margie) of Pueblo West, Colorado and Jim Sweeney of Iowa City; nephews, Tim, Tom, Steve, Michael & Matt; nieces, Molly, Becky, Stacey & Stephanie; great-nephews, Kyle, Mitchell, Mason, Jonathan, Jacob, John, Joe, Phoenix & Jacob and great-nieces, Emily, Madeline, Myranda, Elizabeth, Kaidyn, Samantha, Alissa, Donovan and Allison.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Ann, a sister in law, Sue Sweeney and a brother in law, Ed Kelley.
