John Anthony Lenoch, 90, of Iowa City, died peacefully at Mercy Hospice on Dec. 3, 2016. John was born June 13, 1926, in Iowa City, where he was a life-long resident.

John graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1944, and later served two years in the United States Navy. John attended the University of Iowa and Iowa City Commercial College. He married Sophia Garrett on April 3, 1948.

John was employed at Kelly Farm Equipment for three years and worked as an accountant for five years. He began his career at Iowa-Illinois in 1958, where he was employed for 30 years. John served as clerk for five years, before becoming supervisor for Building and Stores in 1963, a position he held until his retirement in 1988.

John was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks Club, and American Legion. John also enjoyed his Saturday mornings at “the office” with his friends and golf partners.

John was a loving husband and father; and a dedicated and supportive family man. He enjoyed bowling and golf, polka music, and having the inside scoop on the Iowa Hawkeyes. But most of all, he loved spending time and laughing with, his family. John’s quick wit and sense of humor, pointed at others and himself, provided laughs and pure joy for the entire family.

John is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Sophia Garrett Lenoch, seven children: David (Bev) Lenoch, Cindy (Mike) Cummings, Kathy (Mike) Steffen, Frannie (Dennis) Griffin, Susan Lenoch, Janet (Steve) Roe, and Celia (Rick) Eckermann; 15 grandchildren, Katy Demeulenaere, Andrea Beeson, Michelle Cummings, Marc Cummings, Bryan Steffen, Casey Steffen, Bridgette Meinhold, Scott Griffin, Tony Griffin, Kelly Anderson, Ben Mitchell, Nike Fleming, James Roe, Kacie Eckermann, and Nile Eckermann; 21 great grandchildren; sister Rita Krall and sisters in law Pat Lenoch and Kathryne Lenoch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister, 1 niece, 1 nephew and twin great granddaughters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11AM, Wednesday, Dec. 7th at St. Wenceslaus Church, Iowa City. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a sharing of memories will begin at 6:30 PM followed by the recitation of the Rosary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospice or the charity of your choice.
