Janice Mae (Maher) Sines, age 87, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 in Iowa
City after a long illness.

Born on January 30, 1929 in Lismore, Minnesota, Janice was preceded in death by parents
William and Marie (Cleveland) Maher, and her husband of 58 years, Jacob O. Sines. She will
be dearly missed by their four children, Elizabeth (Richard Schnieders), William (Mary Gurney),
James (Sherry), and Margaret (David Jacobs); her seven grandchildren, Caroline Schnieders
(Yvette Soignier), Margaret Marshall (Chad), Thomas Sines (Dina McLeod), Benjamin Sines
(Sandra Davidson), Lauren Sines, Elizabeth Smith, and Jacob Smith; her four greatgrandchildren, Eliot and Arlo Schnieders, and Alexis and Miles Marshall; her sister Joan Parker; brother-in-law Lloyd Sines; and nieces and nephews.

Janice was a strong matriarch, making a home for her family in each of the college towns to
which Jake’s career took them. Her inquisitive nature and quick wit allowed her to connect with
a stranger and find common ground. An excellent cook, Janice enjoyed dining out, reading,
politics, theater, and travel. She and Jake joined friends and family on many domestic and
international trips over the years.

Janice was a community volunteer, committing her time and energy to organizations including
the League of Women Voters and the University of Iowa Hospital. When her children were
older, she took a job in the OB-Gyn department at the University Hospital, where she was an
integral part of their recruitment efforts, and she served for many years as a precinct election
official.

A family celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

The family extends special thanks to Tacora and Deb as well as the volunteers and staff at Iowa
City Hospice and Oaknoll Health Center for the care they provided Mom. Memorial donations
may be made to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, IA 52240.
