George E. Drea, 79, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. The Very Reverend Rudolph Juarez will officiate. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2:00 – 6:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to The George Drea Memorial Fund.

George was born on June 4, 1936 in Danbury, Iowa to F.E. “Ed” and Rose (Schrunk) Drea. George graduated in 1954 from high school in Walnut, Iowa and moved to Iowa City where he has resided for the last 61 years. George married Donna Hunter on September 15th, 1958 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, Iowa. George owned and operated Highland Ave. DX from 1959 to 1989. He proudly opened Drea Automotive on 1936 Boyrum Street in 1990 until his retirement about four years ago.

George was proud of his Irish heritage and he was honored to be a member of the Solon American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.

George was an avid fan of Dale Earnhart and of NASCAR. George built engines for drag racing friend Donald Silerad during the late 1950s and into the late 1960s he built stock car engines with John Moss.

George loved spending time at his cabin in Guttenberg, Iowa on the weekends, as well as time on the water boating, fishing and water skiing on the Green Submarine.

George was also very proud of his grandchildren and loved them very much.

Survivors include his children, Deb Zenisek (Jim), Dan Drea, David Drea (Sarah), Mike Drea, Melanie Schusteritsch (Rob) and Darcy Huber (Tom); 1 sister, Deanna Anderson (Jim) and grandchildren, Kyle Drea, Tori Zenisek and Kyle Zenisek and Elsa Schusteritsch.

George was preceded in death by a daughter Michelle.
