Paul “Tom” M. Kennedy, 89, of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2016, at Briarwood Care Center.

A Funeral Service will be held at 6:00 PM, Friday, April 1, 2016 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Visitation will be from 3 -6 PM at the funeral home prior to the service.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City with Military Honors provided by the Coralville American Legion.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Briarwood Care Center, Iowa City.

Tom was born on February 22, 1927 in Chicago, IL, the son of Paul and Georgia (Davis) Kennedy Sr. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School. Tom served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was united in marriage to Mary Terry on June 5, 1948 at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City; she preceded him in death on July 20, 2013. Tom started Iowa City Auto Salvage in 1958 and operated the business for 25 years. He also worked with his father for 15 years at Kennedy Auto Market and Mann Auto Market for 8 years as an auto body repairman. Tom was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He loved airplanes and obtained his private pilot’s license at only seventeen years old. He enjoyed aviation so much he built his own aircraft from 1964 -69.

Tom is survived by his six children, Patrick (Margarita) Kennedy of Iowa City, Tim Kennedy of Iowa City, Joe Kennedy of Gilbert, AZ, Mary (Rick) Albaugh of Gilbert, AZ, Jane Kennedy of Turkey, and Kitty Lake of Iowa City; eleven grandchildren, Sean, Stephanie, Natalie, Kyna, Shannon, McKayla, Tamara, Andrew, Daniel, Kevin, David; and nine great-grandchildren.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; daughter, Christine “Teeni” Ramer; sister, Shirley Mays; and daughter-in-law Peggy Kennedy.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Champion for his wonderful care.
