Alexander “Alex” Chappell, Jr., 69, of Iowa City, passed away unexpectedly Friday, March 18, 2016 following a difficult battle with Parkinson’s.

Visitation will be held from 9-11 am Thursday, March 24th at the Gay & Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City with funeral services beginning at 11. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family at www.gayandciha.com.

Alex was born October 2, 1946, in Elizabeth, NJ; son of Alexander and Emelda (Neuges) Chappell. In adolescence, Alex was always involved in sports, playing in little league and football and as he matured, took up surfing and skateboarding in the ‘60s. During this time he worked tirelessly to buy his first car, a GTO convertible which traveled well with a surf board. While in high school, he was a talented football player, making the All-County team at Jefferson High. In 1969, driven by his love for music, Alex made the trek to Woodstock, hitchhiking his way across the country. In early adulthood, he was a body builder, avid reader and into cycling, completing a ride from LA to San Francisco. His brother, credits Alex for turning him onto some great books, including The catcher in the Rye and Lord of the Rings. While in California he worked for an aerospace company and also in health care. He earned his degree from Bernard Baruch College, New York and resided in the Los Angeles, CA area from the early 70’s until 1997 when he moved to Iowa. While in California, he was married to Nancy with whom he had two daughters, Jennifer and Kimberly Chappell. In 1991 he met his current wife, Anne Knight, and together they moved to Iowa in 1997. He had worked about ten years at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

While not working, Alex could be found working on military models, he was an award-winning modeler, and took great pride in his work and the small details that went into each re-creation. He also shared his love with his boxers, Rosie and Rocky.

Alex’s family includes his wife of 24 years, Anne Knight; daughters, Jennifer and Kimberly Chappell of California; brother, Malcolm Chappell of New Jersey and step-sons, Derek and Johnathan Gunn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Wayne Chappell.
