Mary Theresa Mihalchik Bernardini, 91, died peacefully on March 8, 2016 following a lengthy illness. She was a devoted mother, spouse, and best friend who will forever be missed. She was born March 8, 1925 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to John and Anna Mihalchik. After graduation from Wilkes-Barre Township High School she attended Brooklyn College N.Y. then affiliated with Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y. where she studied nursing. In 1946 she became a registered nurse. On June 20, 1953 she married Bartolomeo Bernardini at St. Patrick’s Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. They had two children, Joan and Robert.

Mary worked part-time for the Veteran’s Administration Hospital from 1947-1985. During retirement she did volunteer work at the Senior Center, and the Visiting Nurse Association of Johnson County. Mary’s favorite retirement pastimes were traveling and golfing with her beloved husband, and many family vacations. She also enjoyed everyday walking, reading, crewel work, and craft work. Since 2013 she lived at Bickford Cottage of Iowa City, where she considered everyone her second family.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and John Pieper, Coralville, Iowa, her son Robert Bernardini, Wooten, Ohio, and her sister Mildred Rosencrans, Marshall, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brothers John, Andrew, Joseph, Michael, George and Francis.

A Memorial Service will be held at Lensing's Oak Hill in Coralville. Service time and date are pending at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: St. Jude Children’s Research Memorial Center, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Make-A-Wish Iowa, 3024 104th Street, Urbandale, IA 50322.
