Grace Barron died peacefully at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics on Thursday, July 16, 2015 in Iowa City, Iowa with her family at her side. She was 95. She moved to Iowa in 2002 from San Angelo, Texas. Her grace, intelligence, and care for others will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

The family will receive visitors from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 23 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City -- followed by a brief prayer service conducted by the Reverend Dr. Barrie Tritle. There will be a celebration of life service for family and friends on Tuesday, July 28th at St. Luke United Methodist Church in San Angelo, Texas, conducted by the Reverend Bill Harris. Burial will be at Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo. San Angelo arrangements coordinated by Johnson's Funeral Home.

Grace was born Grace Evelyn Wood on May 26, 1920 in Tyler, Texas to Ena Pearl and Matthew Wood. She graduated as an honor student from John Tyler High School in Tyler in 1938. Grace married Glen Roy Barron on May 20, 1939 at St. Paul Methodist Church in Tyler. Principally a homemaker and volunteer, Grace also worked in retail sales prior to her marriage and for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WWII.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Grace dedicated much of her time to supporting her family and participating in the milestones of her loved ones. Grace lost her husband and soul mate, Glen, to cancer in 1978 after 39 blessed years of marriage. She was beloved by family and friends for her steadfast presence, gentle spirit, keen intellect, and her strongly held belief in justice for all people. Grace was remarkably progressive in her beliefs for a person of her generation.

Her childhood and adult years were marked by a love of learning. An avid reader, Grace loved fiction and mystery novels, and found great meaning in Bible study, reading scripture and participating in what is now known as United Methodist Women. She was known for her knowledge of current events, skill with crosswords, and loved playing games and puzzles with family and friends. Grace was an avid sports enthusiast.

A 60-year member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in San Angelo, Texas, she participated actively in adult education and church life, and remained a member during her years in Iowa City. While living in Iowa, she attended Iowa City’s First United Methodist Church whenever possible for her.

The family wishes to thank the caring doctors and nurses at UIHC, particularly those serving on 6 Roy Carver East and the Palliative Care Unit, as well as the staff at Legacy Pointe and Lantern Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Two caregivers became special friends as well, Joyce Bernardy and Dr. Todd Burstain.

Grace has one son, Michael Barron (Kay) of Iowa City. She has two grandchildren, Alissa Barron-Menza (Charles) of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Matthew Barron (Julie) of Iowa City. She has three great-grandchildren, Eleanor and Josephine Barron of Iowa City and Oliver Menza of Silver Spring, Maryland. She has many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Glen, and by her siblings, including Frank Milstead, Lena Hitt, Dorothy Leonard, Margaret Dinklage, and Opal Wood (all of Texas); as well as her parents and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Grace believed in giving to others, so individuals wanting to honor her may wish to consider her favorite charities, which include the United Methodist Committee on Relief, the American Cancer Society, and Heifer International.
