Lauri Rey, 53, of 735 Dearborn Street died at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Thursday, February 12, 2004 following a brief illness.

Memorial Services to celebrate Lauri’s life will be held at 1:30PM, Saturday, February 21, 2004 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Judy Gingerich officiating. Burial will at Oakland Cemetery. A gathering time for family and friends will be Friday,
February 20, 2004 from 4-7PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Emma Goldman Clinic, 227 N. Dubuque St., Iowa City 52245

Lauri was born January 5, 1951 in Santiago, Cuba, the daughter of Alfredo and Carmen Rey. She came to the United States when she was nine years old and moved to Iowa shortly afterward.She was a graduate of Ames High School in 1969 and the University of Iowa College of Nursing in 1977. . She married Randy Brown on September 19, 1976 in Iowa City.

Lauri was a nurse at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in an adult psychiatry unit from 1987 to 2001, then in the OR , and most recently in a maternity unit. From 1981-1987, she worked at the Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia. In the 1970’s she worked at the Emma Goldman Clinic , UIHC pediatric clinics and in the tuberculosis unit at Oakdale.

She was essential in organizing Local 199 of SEIU at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was elected the hospital’s first chapter president and served her fellow nurses in that capacity from 1999 to 2001. She later also served on the executive board of Local 199.

Lauri was a beloved co-worker. neighbor, and mother. She enjoyed photography, bicycling, and travel. She cherished memories of her childhood in Cuba, and beautiful
photographs of her trip to Cuba are among those on the walls of her home. Lauri loved the outdoors, planting beautiful flowers, hiking in the mountains, and watching the birds who visited her feeders. She was always planning or working on her next home improvement project. She was so proud of her children and their accomplishments. She will be missed by the many people whose lived she touched in positive ways.

She is survived by her former husband, Randy Brown and their daughter
Kathleen Brown of Iowa City and their son Grant Brown of Chengdu, China;
her mother, Carmen Rey; her brother, Roberto Rey; and her sister-in-law,
Anne Miller, all of Chicago.

Lauri was preceded in death by her father.
