He earned a B.A. from Southern Illinois University, an M.A. from the University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. He co-chaired the Young Writers' Conference of the Old Capitol Reading Council. He served as president of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City, the North Liberty Optimist Club, and the St. Louis Suburban Teachers of English. He received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor for a scouting volunteer. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa Council of Teachers of English, the Educator of the Year awards from both the Iowa City Education Association and the East Central Uniserve Unit, and the KGAN Golden Apple Award.

He loved to canoe and went on many trips with family, scouts, and friends. He published articles about teaching writers and about canoeing and had several chapbooks of poems and memoirs. He lived his life with kindness, patience, and humility, and always with a wry and unexpected sense of humor.
