Cedar Rapids GazetteJeanne H. Pfeiffer, 81, of Coralville, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Windmill Manor in Coralville following a period of declining health.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 11, 2012, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City, where there will be a period of visitation one hour prior to the services at the church. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 pm Monday at the Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello, Iowa. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com.
Jeanne was born August 24, 1930 in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Vincent and Genevieve (Altman) Sowle. She was raised in Dubuque by her grandmother, Terese Wuchott, and aunt, Vivian (Sowle) O'Dell. Jeanne graduated from Dubuque Senior High in 1948 where she was active in chorus, YWCA, volleyball and the Red Cross. In 1958 Jeanne began working as a nurse's aide at the State Sanatorium at Oakdale. In 1981 Jeanne transferred to the position of environmental aide at the University of Iowa Hospital, working there until her retirement in 1990.
While working at Oakdale, Jeanne met Ralph N. Pfeiffer and they were united in marriage at the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church in Iowa City, on March 12, 1959. Jeanne and Ralph loved to travel and spent many years vacationing throughout the United States. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City and enjoyed reading, crocheting, embroidering, and shopping.
Jeanne is survived by her sister Patricia (Thomas) Marten of Dubuque, IA; sister Lois (Fran) Buse of Lake Havasu, AZ; brother James (Linda) Sowle of Galena, IL; a very special first cousin Naida (Don) Humke of Dubuque, IA; step-son Luther (Sherrie) of Mount Pleasant, IA; step-son Lee (Sherry) of Oskaloosa, IA; step-daughter Julia (Dennis) Herman of North Liberty, IA; 11 step-grandchildren, 30 step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, husband, two sisters and a step-daughter.
