Larry H. Kinney, 76, longtime resident of Iowa City, died Friday, June 8, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following complications of a stroke suffered in 2009.

Mass of Christian burial will begin Tuesday at 10:00 am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The Very Reverend Rudolph Juarez will officiate. Burial is planned for 1:00 pm Tuesday at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove. Visitation will be held Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 3:45pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Church, Iowa City Firefighters Benevolent Fund or The Iowa City Fire Department’s Honor Guard Team.

Larry was born March 6, 1936 in Cosgrove, the son of Martin and Agnes (Gallagher) Kinney. After their graduation from Cosgrove High School, Larry married Jan Scheetz July 5, 1955 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove. He worked as a line welder for Amana Refrigeration until 1965. In September of that same year, he joined the Iowa City Fire Department.

He was promoted to Training Officer in 1971 and in November 1976, was promoted to Fire Marshal. The Fire Marshal position was reclassified in 1988 to Battalion Chief / Fire Marshal. Larry also served as Acting Fire Chief from January 21, 1991 to June 3, 1991. He retired July 5, 1991.

Larry was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, Iowa Society of Fire Service Instructors, Hawkeye State Fire Safety Association, Iowa Association of Arson Investigators, National Fire Protection Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Larry enjoyed Hawkeye football and the time spent with friends and family. Upon meeting Larry, you were always greeted by a smile and a firm handshake. Although severely affected by the stroke and unable to speak – the affects of the stroke could not take away Larry’s smile and the twinkle in his eye.

Survivors include his wife Jan; son, Mike Kinney (Maureen) of San Antonio, daughters, Diane Scott (Pete) of Iowa City and Karen Dix of Phoenix; grandchildren, Josi, Dana (Shawn), Drew, Kelsey, Jack, Max, Keaton and Keely; one great-grandson Bryce;
sister, Rose Ann Kinney Loan (Ron) of Cosgrove and brothers and sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Mike) Ferrel of Coralville and Marilyn (Tom) Maher of Fremont, California.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
