Frances May Rowland, age 83 of 701 Oaknoll Drive, Iowa City died at her home Sunday, November 2, 2003.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 6, 2003 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Jerry Stephenson of the Welsh Congregational Church officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm today at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to the Welsh Congregational Church. Online condolences may be sent for Frances’s family through our website @www.gayandciha.com.
Frances May Tompkins Rowland was born May 21, 1920, in Iowa City the daughter of Roy and Josephine (Smith) Tompkins. She graduated from Iowa City City High School. On February 25, 1939, Frances married Lloyd Newton Rowland in Iowa City. For many years, the couple farmed southwest of Iowa City. Lloyd died May 23, 1985. In December 2001, she moved to Oaknoll Retirement Residence.
She was a member of the Welsh Congregational Church, Johnson County Historical Society, Oaknoll Landscape Committee, and Iowa City TOPPS. She enjoyed volunteering many hours at Atrium Village in Hills. Her family was most dear to her, in addition she loved doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, and her many travels throughout the world. Frances was a stranger to no one, always willing to help.
Her family includes two sons, Robert and his wife, Debra Rowland of Milford, Iowa, and Michael Rowland of Paragould, Arkansas; daughter, Pat and her husband, Ted Hradek of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Colin, Laurie, Amanda, Dustin and his wife, Sheila, Juston, Angela and her husband, Michael, and Teri; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Helen Tompkins of Iowa City, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, two sisters, and one daughter-in-law.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Frances’s family and her services.
