Dean Charles Huff, born on March 21, 1929 in Marengo, Iowa passed away at his home in Iowa City on February 28, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Dean lived a long, fulfilled life and was grateful to his wife and family for years of love, support and “a whole lot of fun”.

Dean was born on a farm outside of Marengo to Lyle and Violetta (Adams) Huff. Dean was the third in a family of six children. Dean’s family moved to the Mason City area when he was very young. His childhood was spent on the farm and he attended country school until the 8th grade. Dean then went on to attend Rockwell High School and graduated in 1946. After high school, Dean worked on the farm with his father and married Helen Moorehead on June 13, 1948. Dean and Helen were fortunate to move to their own farm in 1960 and raised their family. To this marriage were born four children: Steve (Roxanne) Huff of Annandale, Minnesota; Deanna (Stephen Ayers) Hammond of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Dixie (Phil) Ecklund of Iowa City; and Scot (Cheryl) Huff of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Dean and Helen spent several years raising the family and running the farm. Dean entered into his own business, Huff and Taylor Auctioneering, and continued for 25 years. He also sold Pioneer Seed Corn for 9 years. In 1971, Dean and Helen moved the family to Mason City where Dean began a real estate company, Huff Realty. Dean was proud of the fact that he received accreditation from the Farm and Land Institute as a Land Consultant in 1979. In 1989, Dean and Helen relocated to Naples, Florida where Dean continued his real estate career in land sales. In 2008, Dean and Helen relocated to Iowa City to enjoy time with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Dean will be remembered by his family and friends as a loving husband, a great dad, and a man who loved to tell stories and joke around. Dean loved the Hawkeyes, win or lose, and was a proud Democrat. His days as the “life of the party” have passed but his memories and spirit live forever with those who knew and loved him.

Dean is survived by his wife, Helen, his children, Steve, Deanna, Dixie and Scot; his grandchildren Ben (Heidi) Huff, Trevis (Karen) Huff; Nikki (Adam) Thedens, Katie (Jim Vedder) Hammond; Jessica Hammond; Rachel Ecklund; Jake Ecklund (Meredith Roemerman); Kyle Huff and Blair Huff; his great grandchildren, Payton Huff, Gracie Huff; Hilo Huff, Mateo Thedens, Charlie Vedder, Celia Vedder, and Jaxon Huff.

Dean is also survived by his sister Roberta (Jack) Wharam of Indianapolis, Indiana, sister Reva (Chet) Fredin of Waterloo, Iowa and sister in law, Audrey Huff of Mason City, Iowa.

Dean was preceded in death by two infant brothers, a brother Duane Huff, daughter in law, Kristine Ward Huff and son in law, Stephen Hammond.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00 am at St. Marks Methodist Church in Iowa City, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice. The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support over the years.
