Gary “Yogi” Strand, 56, of 40 N. Main Street in North Liberty, died unexpectedly on Friday, September 12, 2003 at University of Iowa Healthcare following a heart attack.

The family will greet friends Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville. Graveside services will be at 10:00 am Tuesday in Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Memorials may be directed to the Gary Strand Memorial Fund.

Gary was born March 18, 1947 in Iowa City, the son of Hugo & Florence (Lampman) Strand. He graduated from Iowa City High School in 1965 and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1969. He designed and built the original “Herky” mascot helmet for the U of I Hawkeyes. Gary was a fan of Harley Davidson and BMW motorcycles and in the early 1970’s, took a year off from work and toured Europe and Mexico. The Sportster that Gary built was featured in the pilot issue of Easyriders magazine in June, 1971.

He married Dianna Miller on October 25, 1991, at North Liberty United Methodist Church. In February of 1999, Gary suffered a paralyzing injury, leaving him a quadriplegic.

He is survived by his wife Dianna; a son, Burke Strand of Davenport; three step-children, Angela McClelland & her husband Shawn, Tami Miller and Matt miller, all of Iowa City; six grandchildren and his father in law, Delbert Knight of Coralville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
