Lois June Powell Orton, 75, of 1020 Richmond in Yukon, Oklahoma, died Saturday, August 23, 2003 at her daughter’s home in Iowa City, following a short illness.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Yukon, Oklahoma, with the Reverend John Morton and the Reverend Joe Williams, officiating. Burial will be at 4:00 p.m. at the Sedan Cemetery in Sedan, Kansas. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Smith & Turner Mortuary in Yukon, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Salvation Army or your local Hospice. The Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service of Iowa City is in charge of local arrangements.
June was born Setember 15, 1927 in Three Sands, Oklahoma, the daughter of Walter Leroy and Olga Leon (Shirer) Powell. She moved with her parents to Winfield, Kansas, where she graduated from high school. At Southwestern College, she met her husband to be, James Aaron Orton, who had finished his tour of duty over India and Burma, as a photographer in the Army Airforce during World War II. They were married August 28, 1949. The couple made their home in Topeka, Kansas and later Yukon, Oklahoma.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Kerr McGee Oil, retiring in the early 1990’s. She especially enjoyed geneology, traveling and volunteering at her church, teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. She was active community volunteer, serving on the election board and delivering Meals on Wheels, as well as, volunteering at the senior center.June is survived by her four children; Linda Bowie and her husband, Ken of Ovalle, Chile, Robert Orton and his wife, Wanda of Emporia, Kansas, Kathleen Armstrong and her husband, Bill of Cedar Rapids, Jamie Achrazoglou and her husband, John of Iowa City, eight grandchildren; Lindsay Ashurst of Emporia, Kansas, Melissa Bowie of Mustang, Oklahoma, Marci Wessel of McKinney, Texas, Sgt. Amber Orton of Manhattan, Kansas, Lori Aebischer of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Eleni, Christina and Steven Achrazoglou all of Iowa City, one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ashurst of Emporia, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
