Hazel Fountain Dies at Age 77

Mrs Russell (Hazel) Fountain, 77, of Route 4, a former member of the Johnson County Social Welfare Board, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital following a long illness.

Funeral services were held today at the George L Gay-Oathout Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Schuldt of First Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Mrs Fountain was born Oct. 26, 1889, in Johnson County, the daughter of Hart A and Ionia Nelson Spencer. A graduate of Iowa City High School, she attended Iowa State College at Ames and was awarded B.A. and M.A. Degrees in child welfare from the University of Iowa.

She was a home economist in Cedar Rapids and in Fargo., N. D., and was supervisor of WPA nursery schools in Des Moines for seven years. She returned to Iowa City and was married to Russell Fountain Sept. 17, 1945. She spent the remainder of her life in Iowa City and Winter Haven, Fla.

Mrs Fountain was a member of First Methodist Church the Order of Eastern Star, and Kappa Delta Sorority. Until several years ago, she was a member of the county welfare board.

Survivors include her husband, sons John Schaus of Clarendon Hills, Ill. And Richard Fountain of Iowa City; daughter Mrs Lloyd (Marian) Plecker of Washington, Iowa; two brothers, Mark Spencer of Winter Haven, and George Spencer of Iowa City; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
