Carol Jean Larsen Horton was born near Newell, Iowa on 26 October, 1932, the 5th and youngest daughter of Julia Nielsen Larsen and Olrich William Larsen. She attended public schools in Newell, graduated from Newell High School, and then graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Carol received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Drake University and during this period she taught voice at Grandview College and was the soloist for several churches in Des Moines. She married Loren Horton on 27 December, 1957, in New York City, where she studied voice with Rose Bampton and was in the professional choir of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. Following additional vocal study and solo work in San Francisco, she and her husband moved to Cedar Falls where she worked in the University of Northern Iowa library. While her husband pursued graduate studies in Iowa City, she worked in the Department of Social Services at the University of Iowa Hospital. They moved to Davenport where Carol completed her education courses and earned a teaching certificate at Marycrest College. She taught at St. Katherine’s School and was a voice instructor at Augustana College in Rock Island.

The couple returned to Iowa City in 1969 and Carol earned a Master of Arts degree in Special Education and taught at the University Hospital School. During the ensuing years she was employed at the Preucil School of Music and at Willowwind School. Carol was a charter member of and sang for 28 years with the Chamber Singers of Iowa City, and sang with the Collegium Musicum at the University of Iowa. She also was a charter member of the New Horizons Band at the Iowa City Senior Center, where she played the euphonium. Carol has been the alto soloist at churches throughout Iowa, and has been the alto soloist for many MESSIAH performances in this state. Carol sang her first solo at the age of 4, at a church program in Newell. She played in her last New Horizons Band concert on December 16, 2010 and sang a solo, “White Christmas” at that concert. She sang her last vocal solo at the Oaknoll Remembrance Service on January 26, 2011 and sang in her last Chamber Singers concert on February 27, 2011. Her musical career spanned a total of 74 years.

Carol is survived by her husband, Loren, by 4 sisters: Norma (Charles) Wilson, Majel Sargent, Lorraine McVey, and Joyce Madison. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews and more distant relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 nephews, 1 niece, and 3 brothers-in-law. At the time of her death, Carol was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church (where she sang in the choir for 33 years), the Iowa City Music Study Club, the Chamber Singers of Iowa City, the New Horizons Band, the Newell Historical Society, and the Danish Immigrant Museum.

The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, or to the Chamber Singers of Iowa City.
