Columbus Junction – Paid & PictureMargaret Hanft Reaney age 84 of Iowa City and formerly of Columbus Junction died on Monday, August 4, 2003 following a brief illness at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City. Burial will be at a later date in the Columbus City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Margaret Reaney memorial fund. Online condolence may be sent to her
family at www.gayandciha.com.Margaret Mae Reaney was born on August 26, 1918 in Columbus Junction, Iowa, the daughter of Charles E. and Bessie James Hanft. She graduated from Columbus Junction Schools and Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. While at Iowa Wesleyan she was a member of the Alpha XI Delta Sorority and graduated Suma Cum Laude with a BA in English. Following graduation she moved to Kalona where she taught English for six years. She married Robert Reaney and moved to Washington D.C. until Robert was drafted in World War II. She returned to Kalona and taught 3 more years until he returned. From Kalona they moved to Columbus Junction where she raised her children and worked as a substitute teacher. In 1976 she moved to Iowa City where she served as House Director of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority at the University of Iowa until her retirement in 1993. Margaret was an active member of the P.E.O., the TTT, and University Women as well as a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church and St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City. She enjoyed socializing, playing bridge, reading, and was very active in her grandchildren's lives; her family and friends will miss her love and devotion.
Her family includes a daughter: Ruth Cornick of Iowa City, three grandchildren, Kesha Cornick, and Angie and David Reaney. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son John C. Reaney and grandson Jade-Austin Cornick. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for Margaret's services and her family.
