Margaret Mary Volk, 97, of Cascade, Iowa died Saturday, May 14, 2011. She was raised in Cosgrove, IA and lived in Iowa City until she moved to Cascade in 2000. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Wednesday, May 18 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove with Father Ed Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in the Volk family plot at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7pm on Tuesday at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City and from 10am until service time at the church. A parish Vigil Service will begin at 6:30pm Tuesday at Lensing Funeral Home.
Margaret was born on April 29, 1914 in Cosgrove, the daughter of George T. and Catherine Barry Volk. She worked at the University of Iowa, in the hospital kitchen and at the UI Quadrangle cafeteria, including time dedicated to the Hawkeye football team’s training table during the Forest Evashevski era; pastries and other desserts were her specialties. She also worked in the kitchen at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. Margaret enjoyed music, cooking, spending time with her nieces and nephews, and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. She was especially helpful to her family in caring for her parents and brother, James Joseph, during the time of their declining health.
Surviving are 26 nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, George and Catherine; five brothers and their spouses, William V. (Anna), George T. Jr. (Catherine), John F. (Sylvia), Peter A. (Viola), and Bernard M. (Irene); a brother, James Joseph; three sisters and their spouses, Mary Ellen (William) Seydel, Agnes (William) Dahnk, and Clara M. (Louis) Kapfer; a sister, M. Virginia, who died in infancy; and 20 nieces and nephews. Margaret was the last surviving member of her family, and her passing signifies the end of a generation.
The family would like to thank Shady Rest Care Center for their wonderful care of Aunt Margaret.
