William L. "Bill" Binney 1918 - 2003

William “Bill” L. Binney, 85, of 701 Oaknoll Drive, Iowa City, passed away Wednesday evening, July 23, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Memorial Services will be at 2:30PM Saturday, July 26, 2003 at Lensing Funeral Service, Iowa City, with the Reverend Paul Akin officiating. A reception at the funeral home will follow the memorial service. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call from 4-6PM Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Iowa City or the Iowa City Noon Host Lions Club.

William L. Binney was born May 6, 1918, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the son of James and Laura (Thomas) Binney. He received his Bachelor of Philosophy degree from the University of Wisconsin. Bill was united in marriage to Shirley Nordstrom on November 20, 1943 in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Bill enlisted in the Army Air Corps in March, 1942 and was commissioned a Lieutenant. He served in the European Theater until the end of World War II. After earning his degree in 1947 he worked as a guidance officer at the State Prison in Waupun, Wisconsin. He was recalled to active duty in 1951 during the Korean Conflict and remained on active duty until 1968. He and Shirley have made their home in Iowa City since 1964 when Bill became associate professor in Air Force ROTC at the University of Iowa. He later became the Director and Chief of Campus Security and Parking for the University of Iowa. He retired in 1985.

Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he ushered and served on numerous committees. He was a member of the Iowa City Noon Host Lions Club for 38 years and had served as President. Bill received the James Stronks Award for distinguished service and the Melvin Jones Award from Lions International Foundation for his dedication to humanitarian services. He was a member of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club, the Johnson County Military Affairs Committee, the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association and the National W Club.

Bill and his wife Shirley loved traveling, throughout North America and abroad, including a
50thth anniversary trip to Hawaii. Bill enjoyed Elder Hostel classes, reading, gardening, bridge, billiards, socializing with friends and a love of nature. He and Shirley were devoted and loving parents and grandparents.

He is survived by two daughters: Barbara Logan of Arlington, Virginia, Susan Maynard and her husband, Terrill of Reston, Virginia; his son, William Binney Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Annandale, Virginia; two grandsons, John and Matthew Maynard and his sister Frances B. Holtman and her husband Jack of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley who passed away May 22, 2003, his son-in-law, Richard Logan and his brother, Richard.
