Luceille D. Howe, 93, formerly of 1635 Ridge Rd. in Iowa City, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Bickford Cottage in Iowa City following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be Monday, July 28, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 30 N. Clinton Street in Iowa City, with the Reverend Dee Lundberg, officiating. Private family burial will be held in Oakland cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Congregational United Church of Christ, the College of Engineering c/o the University of Iowa Foundation, Systems Unlimited or the Humane Society. Mrs. Howe was born August 14, 1909, in LaHarpe, Illinois, the daughter of William O. and Leona M. Eck Dennis. She attended the University of Illinois and later transferred to the University of Iowa. She was united in marriage to Joseph W. Howe on September 4, 1929, in Cresco, Iowa. The couple made their home in Iowa City, where she continued to make her home following his death in 1983.

She was a very active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Triangle Club, the Square Dance Club, University Club and was a former Iowa City Ping-Pong Champion. Mrs. Howe was a past president of the Iowa City Women’s Club, of which she was the longest living active member.

Mrs. Howe is survived by her two children, Joseph D. and his wife Susan Howe of Sedona, Arizona, and Judith and her husband Larry Smith of Coralville, Iowa; five grandchildren, Janet, Jeffrey, Kevin, Stephen and Nile; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her grandson, Joseph; her sister, Annetta; as well as her longtime companion, Dr. Franklin Fallwell.
