Rita Ann Fuhrmeister, 74, formerly of 231 South 7th Avenue died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at Colonial Manor in Amana following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, 618 E. Davenport Street, Iowa City, with the Reverend Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where a Parish Vigil Service will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorials contributions may be directed to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. A luncheon in the church hall will follow the committal services.

Mrs. Fuhrmeister was born April 8, 1929, in Iowa City, the daughter of Edmond and Celia Dvorsky Cole. She was employed in the biochemistry department at the University of Iowa until she was united in marriage to Leonard Fuhrmeister on June 15, 1953, in Iowa City.

Rita was a housekeeper at the Clayton House in Coralville for many years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed gardening, reading, music and dancing.

Rita is survived by her husband Leonard of Amana; three daughters, Diane Marie Schultz and her husband, John of North English, Iowa, Teresa Ann Block of Marion, Iowa and Mary Katherine Davis and her husband, Brian of Williamsburg; her son, Dale Edward Fuhrmeister of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Robert, Joe, Joy, Philip, Brent, Bridget and Rachel; and one great-grandson, Michael.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, William.
