E. Berniece Westcott age 88, formerly of rural Iowa City died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

Funeral services will be held at 1;30 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Harlan Gillespie officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm Tuesday at the funeral home where a Rebekah Memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Berniece’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for Berniece’s family through our website @www.gayandciha.com.

E. Berniece Douglass Westcott was born March 22, 1915, in rural Cedar County, the daughter of Frank and Mary E. (Enlow) Douglass. She graduated from West Branch High School in 1934, and went on to attend Brown’s Business College in Iowa City. On June 26, 1938, she married Harold R. Westcott at the United Methodist Church in West Branch. The couple moved to the Harold’s family farm east of Iowa City where they farmed all their married lives. Harold died December 1, 1986. Berniece continued to live on the century farm until moving to the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty in 1998.

She was an active member of the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Iowa City, where she and Harold were strong supporters of the Annual Chicken Barbeque, she was a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the United Methodist Women, North Scott Circle, Farm Bureau, Solon Blow Club, and a very active member of the Carnation Rebekah Lodge #376 in Iowa City, holding offices on both the local and state level. She loved to raise flowers outside, play cards, do puzzles, and she use to play the violin and piano.

Her family includes her son, Donald and his wife, Judy Westcott of Oxford, and her daughter, Betty and her husband, William Stone of Davenport; eleven grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold; daughter, Evelyn and her husband, Richard Thompson; granddaughter, Lorraine Thompson, and a brother, Merrill Douglass.
