Raymond Henry Fliehler, 91, of Coralville, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Lantern Park Care Center in Coralville after a lengthy illness.
A visitation will be held Friday, July 11 from 2-7 p.m. at Roberson’s Funeral Home and Saturday, July 12 at 9:30-10 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point. Funeral services will be held at Emanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m. Following interment at the Strawberry Point Cemetery, a noon luncheon will be held at the church.
Ray was born on May 11, 1912, in Strawberry Point to Henry and Cassy (Hughes) Fliehler. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Sebald Lutheran Church. He graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1929, and he was in the Class of 1938 in the University of Iowa law school. Ray married Hazel Marie Anna (Blondie) Baumgartner on June 6, 1940, at St. Sebald Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. Paul Eilers. They had four children.
Ray first practiced law in Edgewood, and then he moved to Strawberry Point where he practiced law for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and the Clayton County Bar Association.
During the early 1930s, Ray participated in the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC), serving on a crew to construct buildings in Backbone State Park. In addition, Ray was instrumental in the development and construction of Backbone Golf Course and was an avid golfer there. Another one of his hobbies was fishing for walleye on the Mississippi River. He was an active member of the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce in Strawberry Point.
After retirement, Ray and Blondie moved to Coralville in 1994. While living there, he was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. He was Hawkeye fan, attending many football games and wrestling matches, and was a member of the I-Club.
Ray is survived by his wife, a daughter Ellen of Dubuque; three sons: Robert and his wife Sue of West Des Moines, James and his wife Kathy of Waukee, and Jack and his wife Lesanne of Coralville; four grandchildren: Mike Fliehler and his wife Kim of Omaha, Neb., Sara De Hass and her husband Mike of West Des Moines, Gina Rae of Dubuque, and Katie Jo of Coralville; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Jack of Waterloo, and Almon (Al) of Strawberry Point. His parents and sister Jean preceded him in death.
Memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church, Strawberry Point, or Christ the King Lutheran Church, Iowa City.
