Gerald Francis Mellecker was born February 3, 1934, in Hills, the son of Francis “Tade” and Josephine (Doyle) Mellecker. He attended Hills schools through the eighth grade and then attended and graduated from Iowa City City High School in 1951. On November 18, 1953, Stub married Jean Lewis at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hills. For over twenty-seven years Stub was the route man for Kelly Cleaners in Iowa City, he then worked for the University of Iowa in the Physical Plant from 1979 to 1991.

As a lifetime resident of Hills, Stub believed in his community serving on the volunteer fire department from 1959 until 1985, serving as chief from 1973 to 1983, instrumental in establishing the Hills Baseball Association, coaching from the Peewee league up to the Babe Ruth League, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals, an avid NASCAR Fan, cheered on the Iowa Hawkeye’s, and enjoyed the outdoors with hunting and fishing. Stub enjoyed a good game of cards, sitting down with a crossword puzzle, board games, bowling, and of course telling a good story to any one that would listen, but most important in his life was his family, and after his grandchildren were born, they were the icing on the cake!

His family includes his wife, Jean; sons, Michael and his wife, Lynn of Hills, Patrick and his wife, Emily of Iowa City, Thomas and his wife, Sue of Solon, Martin and his wife, Melody of Hills, Nicholas of Hills, and SFC Stephen and his wife, Kathy of Lawton, Ft. Sill, OK; eleven grandchildren, Tony Mellecker, Kevin Mellecker, Heather and her husband, Chris Potter, Chris Mellecker, Meghan Mellecker, Mark Mellecker, Morgan Mellecker, Amanda Mellecker, Tade Mellecker, Richard Poage, and Ashley Mellecker; great-granddaughter, Alexis Potter; brothers and their wives, Bernard and Phyllis Mellecker of Riverside, and Ken “Red” and Janet Mellecker of Coralville; sisters, Delores and her husband, Duane Latta of Mt. Pelier, IA, Eileen Yotty of Kalona; and dearest friends, Dolores and Earl Riggan of Riverside.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Melissa, and a brother-in-law, Marvin Yotty.

Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Stub’s family and his services.
