Richard N. “Dick” Roberts, 63, of 2801 Highway 6 East in Iowa City, died early Monday morning at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from complications of lung cancer.

Services will be held Friday at 11:00 am at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, with the Reverend Beverly Hovenkamp officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to The Richard Roberts Memorial Fund, to be designated for lung cancer and brain injury research.

Richard was born August 27, 1939, the son of Bryant W. & Bessie (Bartholomew) Roberts. He graduated from Winfield High School and served in the United States Marines. Richard worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Iowa City for many years as a cable splicer and foreman. Taking a year off from work, Richard returned to The University of Iowa to receive his degree in accounting and returned to work for Northwestern Bell as an accountant. Richard married Judy Hill on June 13, 1964 in Rock Island, Illinois. The couple later divorced but remained great friends. He most recently had worked for the Department of Defense as an accountant in many locations throughout the United States.

Richard enjoyed traveling, was a Civil War historian and was a member of MENSA. He was a runner, running in many marathons, including the New York, Los Angeles and Marine Corps. marathons. Richard also earned his black belt in karate.

Survivors include his children: daughter, Laurie Lynch & her husband Pat of Iowa City, son, Chris Roberts & his wife Jennifer Lockhart Roberts of Iowa City; daughter Elizabeth “Libby” Roberts Anderson & her husband Jim of Solon, and daughter Allison Roberts of Iowa City; a sister, Wanda Marie Miller & her husband Monte of Wapello; a brother, Irvin B. Roberts of Winfield; six grandchildren, Nathan, Morgan, Ryan, Haley, Jesse & Jake; and extended family & close friends, Judy & Jim Scott of Nichols.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Beverly Roberts.
