Alexander Simon, 87, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Lantern Park Care Center following a brief illness.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, June 22, 2003, at 11AM at Agudas Achim Congregation with Rabbi Jeff Portman officiating, Burial will be at Agudas Achim Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Agudas Achim Congregation Library Fund or the Biblical Garden Fund.

Alex was born September 11, 1915, in New York City, the son of William and Ida Feinberg Simon. He was united in marriage to Irene Goldman on April 20, 1941, in New York City.

As a teenager, Alex worked in his family’s restaurant in the Bronx. Later, he was in involved in market research and sales. In 1965 while working full time, he received his BA degree in psychology from the City College of New York. Alex received a fellowship from Columbia University where he earned his Master's in teaching reading and then did additional graduate work toward his PhD at Fordham University. For many years he taught remedial reading and study skills at Bronx Community College. He was very proud of the impact he had on the lives of those he taught.

Following his retirement, he and Irene moved to Iowa City. He taught at Kirkwood Community College as an adjunct professor. Alex did volunteer work at Kirkwood Community college and several Neighborhood Centers in Iowa City.

While living in New York City he and Irene were active members of the Clearview Jewish Center, and after moving to Iowa City joined Agudas Achim Congregation. They did volunteer work at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Iowa City Senior Center. They enjoyed being involved with Opera Supers.

Alex especially enjoyed tennis, jogging, opera, gardening and reading. Following Irene’s death, he helped to support others through their bereavement.

He is survived by his son, Jonathan Simon and his wife Susan of Iowa City, Two Grandsons: Michael Simon and his wife Tami and their daughter Leah Renee of Bethesda, Maryland, and Adam Simon and his wife Lori and their son Noah Asiel of Chicago; and one brother, Sol Simon of Brooklyn, New York.

Alex was especially close to his brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
