Marie Elizabeth Miller, 86, formerly of 2024 A Street died peacefully Monday, June 9, 2003 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, Iowa.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, June 12, 2003 at 10AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Revs. James Vrba and Dennis Martin officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-7PM Wednesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 PM. A memorial fund has been established. A reception in the parish hall will follow the committal services.

Mrs. Miller was born November 21, 1916 in Worthington, Iowa , the daughter of Jacob and Josephine Besler Merfeld. She attended school in Cascade, Iowa and was united in marriage to Alvin B. Miller on May 31, 1949 at Sacred Heart Church in Monticello, Iowa. Alvin died November 2, 1996.

Marie grew up in Monticello and moved to Iowa City in 1955, where she had been a seamstress at Rosheks, J.C. Penney and in her home. She was a clerical employee of ACT, retiring in 1978.

Marie was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church , the Altar and Rosary Society and the St. Patrick’s Needleworkers. She had been a volunteer at the Iowa City Senior Center.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening and bus trips to the casinos with her friends. Marie was always there for her children, grandchildren and neighbors.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Debbie Kay Leith and her husband Guy of Washington, Iowa; two sons, Dean Franklin Miller and his wife Bev of Iowa City and Douglas John Miller of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two sisters, Dolly Janssen and her husband John of Monticello, Iowa, and Loretta Brown of Edgewood, Iowa; two Brothers, Ray Merfeld and his wife Maj of St. Petersburg, Florida, Albert Merfeld and his wife Wilma of Monticello, Iowa; ten Grandchildren, Kari and her husband Mark, Chad, Brian, Traci and her husband Jamey, Alex, Staci, Lindsey, Jessica, Alicia and Tiffany; and four Great Grandchildren Jacob, Austin, Tyler and Kayana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son David, her twin infant sister Martha, and three brothers Henry, Nick and Lester.
