Charlotte Griffith 90 of Iowa City died Friday, December 17, 2010 at her home from complications related to leukemia.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 am, Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Brent Hartwig officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Charlotte was born October 17,1920 in Mallard, Iowa, the daughter of Rev. Adolph and Martha (Schleusener ) Cagann. She was a graduate of Mallard High School, where she played on the girls basketball team. Charlotte had been crowned the princess at the Iowa State Girls Basketball Tournament. She attended the University of Iowa and on October 12, 1940 married Milton Griffith in Sioux City.
Charlotte was a Johnson County Deputy Clerk of Court in probate for twenty years, retiring in 1986. Prior to that, Charlotte had been employed for many years at the University of Iowa with the College of Education Iowa Testing Program.
Charlotte was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, the LWML , Johnson County Legal Secretaries Assn. and the Mercy Hospital Guild, where she volunteered for 18 years. She loved Hawkeye sports and her Chicago Cubs.
Charlotte is survived by her three children, Michael Griffith, Barb (Ron) Jones, and Sheila Payton, all of Iowa City; two grandsons, Scott (Jane) Jones and Todd (Ellen) Jones, both of Iowa City; three great grandchildren; Rebecca, Robert and Christopher Jones; two step great grandchildren, Nick (Leena) Lewis and Kristin Lewis; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1981, five sisters and one brother.
