Hubert “Hugh” Carl Krotz, 84, died peacefully on Friday, December 17, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Hugh was born in rural Washington County, IA on November 21, 1926, the son of William and Genevieve (Klein) Krotz. He attended Washington County schools and continued to live in that area until enlisting in the United States Army in 1945. In 1946, following being honorably discharged from the service, Hugh moved back to Iowa City. On February 10, 1948, Hugh married Kathleen “Kay” Marie Greazel. Kathleen later passed away on February 13, 1999.
For over 47 years, Hugh worked as a paint and wallpaper contractor, most recently operating and co-owning Commercial Decorators until his retirement in 1986. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Iowa City Eagles Lodge #695, a past member of American Legion Post #17 and a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
Hugh is survived by his four children: Sherry (Todd) Hinsch of Oronoco, MN, Dee Dee Courtney of Iowa City, Michael Krotz of Iowa City and Tammy Krotz (Phyllis Burnett) of San Marcos, TX; two brothers: Wilbur and Walter Krotz; and a sister Evelyn Boyse; three grandchildren: Shalene (Adam) Schmalzbauer, Heather (Jake) Moore and Stephanie Courtney; and three great-grandchildren Lindsey, Zachary and Lucas Moore.
Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen, his parents William and Genevieve, his three brothers Lloyd, Leonard and Leo, and his two sisters Alma Kucera and Viola Forbes.
