Harold J. Goering 1917 - 2003

Harold J. Goering, 85, of 208 Paddock Circle, Iowa City, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Mercy Iowa City following a long illness.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 24, 2003, at 10:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Iowa City with Reverend James Vrba officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery with military rites provided by VFW Post 3949, the American Legion and other local military organizations. Friends may call Friday from 4-8PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City where the Marquette Council of the Knights of Columbus will recite a rosary at 6:30PM and a Parish Vigil Service will be recited at 7PM. A reception in the church hall will follow the committal services. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick’s Church or the Knights of Columbus Building Fund.

Harold was born August 6, 1917, in Geddes, South Dakota, the son of Raymond & Edith Brugman Goering. He was raised in Geddes and moved to Iowa City in 1939.

Harold served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 – 1945. Upon returning from the war, he married Opal Kabisch December 27, 1945, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. He was a plumber for 20 years with the University of Iowa Physical Plant. Following retirement in 1980, he was a self- employed plumber.

Harold was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Marquette Council #842, Iowa City Eagle’s Lodge and Iowa City V.F.W.Post #3949. Harold volunteered with the Visiting Nurses Association for more than 20 years and the Johnson County/ Iowa City Senior Center. He helped to establish the Avenue of Flags at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Harold served as president of AFSCME #12 and was a member of the Iowa City Men’s Bowling Association.

Survivors include his wife Opal; one son, Richard Goering & his wife Margaret of Iowa City and their sons Brian of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and Bradley and his wife Karen of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; two daughters, Karen Bixby of Iowa City and her daughter Jennifer of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Shirley Lyle of Vienna, Virginia; one great grandson, Grahm Michael; and one sister, Helen Harding of Tucson, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lloyd & Ralph; and one son-in-law, Virgil.
