Margaret Gordon, 64, of 1007 16th Avenue in Coralville, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, May 12, 2003 from cancer.

There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty with Reverend Beverly Hovenkamp officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials directed to Iowa City Hospice. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret was born November 10, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William & Dorothea (Koch) McLeod. She graduated from the University of Iowa and attended the University of Chicago. She married Don Gordon, October 1, 1960 at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago.

Margaret began her career in EEG in 1962. She trained at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and worked in Des Moines until her return to Iowa City in 1971. She became the Chief Technologist of the University of Iowa Hospital EEG lab in 1974 and worked in that capacity until her retirement in 1997.

In 1975, Margaret developed a training program that was a cooperative effort between the University Department of Neurology and Kirkwood Community College. She served as Program Director and instructor until her retirement. Margaret was a member of the joint Review Committee on EEG who’s work it was to evaluate EEG educational programs and make recommendations regarding accreditation. She was active in local, regional and national EEG society work serving in many capacities including President of The American Society of EEG Technologists in 1982 – 1983. Margaret was well recognized and respected nationally for her interest in EEG education and quality EEG.

She also had a keen interest in certification of EEG technologists and served a term on the American Board of Registration of EEG Technologists. She received many awards, including the Theda Sannit Award for Outstanding Educators in 1966 and the Maureen Burkley Award in 1980 for her paper entitled “Artifact Created by Imbalanced Electrode Impedance”. She was also a frequent invited speaker to EEG Technologist groups and served as a member of the John Knott Educational Lecture Series.

She is survived by her husband Don of Coralville; her children, Anne Bauer & her husband Jeremy of Cedar Rapids, James Gordon & his wife Kate of Tucson, Arizona and Andrew Gordon & his wife Virginia of Mapleton, Illinois; and three grandchildren, Annika Grace, Isabella Rose and Alton McLeod.

Her parents preceded her in death.
