Elma E. Cooney, 87, of 1799 5th Street, Coralville, died Tuesday evening, May 13, 2003 at her home following a lengthy illness.

Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with the Reverend Michael Phillips, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where there will be a 7:00 p.m. parish vigil service and a 7:30 p.m. rosary at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Iowa City.

Elma was born May 11, 1916 outside of Wellman, Iowa, in Iowa County, the daughter of Ernest and Wilhemina “Minnie” (Schaffner) Humphreys.
She was united in marriage to Thomas Cooney on May 22, 1934, in Holbrook, Iowa. The couple made their home in the Holbrook area until moving to Riverside in 1944. They moved to Iowa City in 1954 and she had worked at the New Process Laundry until 1971. She later was in housekeeping at Hillcrest Dormitory in Iowa City. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the St. Wenceslaus Altar & Rosary Society. She especially enjoyed quilting and the outdoors, tending her garden and fishing.

Elma is survived by her two daughters, Wilma Mullinnix and her husband Charles of Lone Tree, Doris Ruth and her husband Eugene of Riverside,
her step-son, Leonard Cooney and his wife, Dorothy of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren, Patricia, Donald, Ann, Gary, Cathy, Janice, Ed, Jean, Peggy and Lisa; twenty-three great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas in 1991, one grandson, Kevin Mullinnix, and one great-granddaughter, Michelle Mayberry, her twin sister, Thelma Evans, and two other sisters. Gayle Duffy and Esther Ziegler.
