Hugh W. Jennings, 83, of 2615 Friendship Street, Iowa City, died Sunday evening, April 13, 2003 at the Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Reverend Kenneth Kuntz, officiating. Burial will be in the English River Cemetery, South English, Iowa. Friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where there will be a parish rosary at 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Hugh Jennings Memorial Fund and online condolences can be sent to the family at www.lensingfuneral.com .

Hugh W. Jennings was born December 3, 1919 near Parnell, Iowa, the son of John and Anna (McDonald) Jennings. He attended school in the Parnell area and following his mother's death at an early age worked with his father on the family farm. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Combat Engineers in Germany during WWII. He was united in marriage to Helen Grove on January 22, 1944 in Parnell. Following the war the couple made their home in Williamsburg and later moved to Iowa City area in 1957 where he worked for various construction companies in the area retiring in the late 1980’s.

Hugh especially enjoyed spending time with his family, he was a good husband and father, a hard worker and treasured his time with his horses.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Helen of Iowa City; three sons, Dick Jennings of Placentia, California, Dennis Jennings and his wife Starr of Iowa City, and Gary Jennings and his wife Connie of Lexington, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Samantha, Shannon, Drew and Chris; two step-grandchildren, Troy and Ellen; and one great-grandchild, Quinn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, three brothers, and his daughter-in-law, Becky.
